Bird by Bird or Bird Bowl by Bird Bowl: What I'm doing for Ovarian Cancer Awareness

My older brother was trying to get a report on birds written that he'd had three months to write, which was due the next day. As a person with a lot of anxiety, I love this story.  Often times I will be freaking out about what I perceive are a ton of things that I have to get done and my husband will ask me what those things are.  I list them and then he says, “Okay, that’s three things and will take about ½ hour.”  Bird by bird.

There are a lot of things going on in the world that can seem a bit depressing, hopeless and overwhelming.  We feel like we can’t really do anything to overcome world hunger, disease or disaster.  The other day I told my husband that I wanted to start a “movement”.  Then I realized that people who start movements probably don’t ever utter the phrase, “I want to start a movement”.  He mentioned that people who start movements probably get out of bed before 8:00 but I let that go (although for the record, this week I’ve gotten up at 6:00 everyday).

So, what can I do? When I saw that Good Friends Fitness, where I attend group exercise classes, was gearing up for Ovarian Cancer Awareness month in September I knew what I wanted to do.  These are the people who over the last year or so have gotten my body back into shape so I can load and unload my kilns and pick up a 25 lb bag of clay off the floor without injuring myself.  This year in partnering with the Ovarian Cancer Aliance of North Florida, they raised around $15,000 for Ovarian Cancer Research with an awareness bicycle ride in Tallahassee.  That is amazing!

On Friday, September 2nd, people are being asked to wear teal in support of Ovarian Cancer awareness month. I have decided to design two sets of nesting bird bowls that will have teal colored details on them.  One set will be reserved for a luncheon later in the month but the other set will be given away on September 2nd.  All you have to do is go to my Julie Guyot Studio facebook page and post a picture of yourself wearing teal on September 2nd and you will be entered into the drawing for the bowls. 

It’s not a movement.  It’s a really small gesture, I know.  It’s just a set of bird bowls.  But for now I’m gonna take it bird bowl by bird bowl and see what happens.
